For the US Navy, the tiny atom has been a big friend. Nuclear power allows the Navy's aircraft carriers and submarines to stay at sea for extended periods, limited only by the endurance of their crews.
But there's a downside to nuclear-powered vessels: How do you dispose of them when they're no longer needed? While most ships eventually end up in the scrapyard, breaking up a radioactive power plant is a different matter — specially when it's in a giant aircraft carrier.

In early April, the Navy published a pre-solicitation notice announcing that Huntington Ingalls' Newport News Shipbuilding division would formulate requirements for scrapping the USS Nimitz. The Nimitz was commissioned in 1975 as the first of the 10 Nimitz-class vessels that comprise most of the current US carrier fleet.
The Nimitz would only be the second American nuclear-powered carrier scheduled to be scrapped. The first is the USS Enterprise, which was commissioned in 1961 and was also the world's first nuclear-powered carrier. Though the Enterprise was decommissioned in 2017, the Navy is just beginning a years-long process to safely dispose of it.
"The bulk of the Navy's past dismantlement and disposal work is comprised of comparatively low-cost projects—particularly submarines—with limited resource demands compared to a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier like CVN 65 [USS Enterprise], a multi-year project with a cost that will potentially exceed $1 billion," noted a 2018 Government Accountability Office report. A nuclear sub cost about $26 million to scrap, GAO estimated.

The model accessorized with strings of pearls draped around her waist and neck and a black tasseled bag.
Olivie Wilde also stuck to the sheer trend by displaying her figure in a silver open-knit mesh dress and leather platform boots.
Also at the afterparty was singer and actress Janelle Monae, who wowed in a black sequin bikini and white platform boots.

The problem isn't that the Navy doesn't have experience dismantling nuclear-powered ships. The US Navy launched the first atomic submarine — the USS Nautilus — in 1954. (The first nuclear-powered surface ship was the Soviet icebreaker Lenin, launched in 1957.)

USA TODAYSince 1990, the Navy has inactivated — which entails removing the nuclear fuel and reactor compartment — more than 130 nuclear-powered ships, according to the GAO. In addition to carriers and subs, the Navy also built nine nuclear-powered cruisers in the 1960s and 1970s. The last of them, USS Arkansas, left service in 1998.
It wasn't until a British firearms expert suggested to the author that the Beretta 418 used in the early books was too much of a "lady's gun" that the change was made to the PPK. The fact that the choice of handgun was also used by Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler to take his own life has only made the PPK even more infamous – but anyone who has heard the words, "Bond, James Bond," likely knows the PPK.

Technically most people probably don't know the Smith & Wesson Model 29, but they do know the important part – that a .44 Magnum could blow your head clean off. Actually, we'd probably debate that latter statement too, because there'd be nothing clean about it! However, it was Clint Eastwood's now infamous character "Dirty" Harry Callahan who first made the bold claim in the 1972 film Dirty Harry.

It wasn't actually the film debut for the Model 29, and Harry's .44 Remington Magnum cartridge had been eclipsed in size and power by the .454 Casull round. Still, ask anyone to name the most powerful handgun, and the answer will likely be Dirty Harry's famous hand cannon.
AR-15/M16: Most Famous Gun or Infamous?
This one isn't famous for its appearances in popular culture – and few firearms enthusiasts likely know that the ArmaLite AR-15/M16 made its screen debut in the 1964 film Seven Days in May. Instead, unfortunately, this firearm is now infamous due to its use in a few mass shootings and mainstream media's reporting on the firearm. Following these tragic events, there are always reports that highlight how these have become a popular choice for those hell-bent on committing these atrocities.

It overlooks that more than 20 million have been legally sold and that the firearm has become popular for law-abiding hunters, sport shooters, and those looking for a firearm for home defense. Yet, the media hates it – claiming it is destroying America – and that fact has made it more famous than the Beatles!
The AK-47 (Most Famous Gun in War?)
About the only firearm perhaps more well-known around the world than the AR-15/M16 would be its primary rival, the Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947, more commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It was described in the opening of the film Lord of War by the film's protagonist/narrator Nicholas Cage as being, "The world's most popular assault rifle, a weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9-pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood, it doesn't break, jam or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy even a child can use it, and they do."
What is noteworthy is that the firearm was completely unknown in the west until it was first seen during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. And despite the fact that it entered service some 15 years before the AR-15/M16, the AK didn't even make its western movie debut until 1977, when it was seen in the Israeli-made feature Operation Thunderbolt, which chronicled the daring Israeli commando raid on the Entebbe Airport on July 4, 1976.

Yet, by the 1990s, thanks to a wave of Vietnam War films, and mention in hip-hop songs, the gun has become infamous. As Cage's character in Lord of War also noted, the Soviet Union put the AK-47 on a coin, and Mozambique had it on its flag. More than 70 million have been produced, and the AK now has the kind of fame that rivals a social media megastar.

Bündchen returned to the Met Gala in grand fashion, marking her first time at the star-studded event after finalizing her divorce from Tom Brady.
The 42-year-old supermodel sported a vintage Chanel gown with feathered wings for the opening of The Costume Institute's new spring exhibition.
"I loved the memories with him and the times together," she told Met Gala red carpet host La La Anthony of working with Lagerfeld throughout her career. "He was a gentleman and a wonderful man."

Lopez walked the carpet showing some skin in a Ralph Lauren gown with a black satin bra top to match a tight pink skirt which billowed down into a mermaid tail.
She wore a black fascinator hat, and after saying hello to herself, told Anthony at the top of the stairs: "I wasn't sure about the hat, but now I'm excited about it."
Nicole Kidman paid tribute to a past collaboration with Lagerfeld by wearing the exact dress she donned in the Chanel No. 5 commercial nearly 20 years ago.

Kidman, who enjoyed date night with husband Keith Urban, stunned wearing the blush pink gown. She reminisced with Anthony about the commercial she worked on with "Elvis" director Baz Luhrmann.
"I have the sketches when he was drawing it, then we fitted it," she said. "To be able to honor him and show Chanel, how these couture gowns last, and the exquisiteness and … to be able to wear the same thing 20 years later, and it still holds. It's light as a feather and hand made. It's couture."

Margot Robbie also looked back to the classics and wore a remake of a black gown with a sheer corset first seen on Cindy Crawford in 1993.
It was date night for a few of Hollywood's favorite couples. Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith walked hand in hand on the red carpet. Brosnan looked sharp in a suit, and wife Keely stunned wearing a see-through black cape over a latex dress.
Hugh Jackman wore a black suit while wife Deborra-Lee Furness rocked a shimmering black turtleneck gown with mirror-mosaic pieces.
Salma Hayek pulled out all the stops wearing a red Gucci number complete with a latex corset and sheer lace skirt including tiers of ruffled tulle. Her husband, François-Henri Pinault, stayed close to her side throughout the glamorous event.
Kim Kardashian wanted to be "feel glamorous" for this year's event, and opted for an ornate Schiaparelli gown. "We wanted to just be dripping in pearls," she said on the red carpet. The mother-of-four said her dress was made of "real pearls" and a few had fallen off along the way, prompting her daughter North to pick up the pricey baubles and save them for later.
Upon reaching the top of the stairs, Kardashian said the evening was full of emotions for their family. "Kendall really started her modeling career with Karl," she told their family friend, La La.
Kendall, sporting a black sequin Marc Jacobs leotard with caped sleeves added, "It's amazing. Like Kim said, I think it’s a little emotional. I owe a lot to him. I'm honored to be here and to celebrate him."

"I'm looking forward to making more memories," the makeup mogul said. "I'm here for a good time, maybe a little tequila.

Florence Pugh revealed a freshly shaved head at her Met Gala debut. The "Don't Worry Darling" star wore a massive feathered headpiece to match her Valentino gown. Pugh's love for the brand recently landed her a new gig as Valentino's ambassador.
The Lagerfeld gallery at the Met will also be on display to the public from May 5 through July 16, 2023.
